You’ve spent many years honing your skills, haven’t you?
Whether you are a hairdresser, a bricklayer, a nurse, or a chef, you know your job inside out. But let’s be real: long hours, physical strain, and shift work take their toll.
What if you could earn the same money (or more) by watching
The transition from “Worker” to “Assessor” is the smartest career move for experienced professionals. The UK apprenticeship market is booming, and training providers are desperate for experts to sign off on qualifications.
The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)—commonly known as the TAQA Assessor Course—is the modern, Ofqual-regulated qualification that replaces the old A1 and D32/33 awards. It legally authorizes you to assess learners in both their workplace and in classroom environments.
At National Training GB, we turn your industry experience into a recognized teaching qualification without you needing to go back to university.
What is the TAQA Assessor Course?
The Level 3 Assessor Course, often referred to as TAQA (Training, Assessment, and Quality Assurance), is actually a suite of qualifications. The “Gold Standard” within this suite is the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA). It is the only qualification that allows you to assess occupational competence in the workplace AND vocational skills in a training center.
Which Course Do You Need?
Most people call us asking for “The TAQA Course.” But TAQA covers three different options. Don’t book the wrong one.
| Qualification | Scope | Best For… |
| Level 3 Award (UPPA) | Understanding Principles Only (Theory). | Managers who don’t assess. |
| Level 3 Award (ACWE) | Assess in the Workplace ONLY. | Site Supervisors / Foremen. |
| Level 3 Award (AVRA) | Assess in the Classroom ONLY. | College Tutors / Workshop Leaders. |
| Level 3 CAVA (The Full Certificate) | Workplace + Classroom (Combined) | Professional Assessors (You want this one). |
Our Advice: 95% of employers ask for CAVA. Don’t limit your career with a partial award. Get the full certificate with National Training GB.
Core Curriculum: How to Assess Without Bias
You might think, “I know good work when I see it.” But can you prove it to an External Verifier? That’s what we teach.
Unit 1: Principles and Practices of Assessment
The theory behind the clipboard. You will learn:
- VACSR: The holy grail of assessing (Valid, Authentic, Current, Sufficient, Reliable).
- Legal Requirements: GDPR, Health & Safety, and Equality in assessment.
Unit 2: Assess Occupational Competence (The Workplace)
This is the “on-the-job” unit. You will learn how to:
- Observe a learner without disrupting their work.
- Conduct a Professional Discussion (recording a conversation to test knowledge).
- Review Work Products (e.g., checking a logbook or a finished wall).
Unit 3: Assess Vocational Skills (The Classroom)
This covers simulations and tests. You will learn how to grade assignments, projects, and case studies effectively.
Instructor’s Pro Insight:
“The biggest hurdle students face isn’t the coursework; it’s the ‘Two Learner Rule.’ To pass CAVA, you MUST assess two real people. You can’t roleplay this. Before you start, speak to your manager or a local college. Ask if you can shadow an assessor and ‘assess’ two of their students. If you have those two candidates, you can finish this course in weeks.”
Who is This Course For?
This IS for you if:
- You are an expert in your field: You have at least 3 years of experience in your sector (Construction, Health & Social Care, Beauty, IT, etc.).
- You want a better work-life balance: Assessors often work flexible hours, visiting different sites and working from home to mark digital portfolios.
- You want to be an EPA (End Point Assessor): This is a high-paying freelance role where you conduct final exams for apprentices. CAVA is the gateway.
This is NOT for you if:
- You just graduated: You need “Occupational Competence.” You can’t assess a plumber if you’ve never fixed a pipe yourself.
- You don’t have access to learners: As mentioned, you need access to two candidates to assess for your portfolio.
Overcoming the “Hidden” Obstacles
“I’m not good with computers.”
Modern assessment is digital. We use E-Portfolios (like OneFile or Smart Assessor).
Good News: National Training GB provides full support on how to use these systems. If you can use Facebook or online banking, you can use an E-Portfolio. No more carrying heavy paper folders!
“Is there a lot of writing?”
The CAVA course is vocational. You earn it while you work. You assess your two candidates during your normal working week. The theory assignments are short and focused on your job role. It is designed for working professionals, not academics.
“What is the pay like?”
Search “NVQ Assessor” on any job board right now. Salaries typically range from £25,000 to £35,000 for full-time roles, with freelance rates hitting £200+ per day.

Frequently Asked Questions (TAQA)
Does this course replace the A1/D32?
Yes. The D32/33 were the original awards. Then came A1. Now, TAQA/CAVA is the current standard. If you hold the old awards, you are still qualified, but CAVA is preferred for new jobs.
Can I assess any subject?
You can only assess subjects where you have “Occupational Competence.” If you are a hairdresser, you can assess hairdressing NVQs. You cannot assess a mechanic (unless you are also a qualified mechanic).
Do I need a teaching qualification (AET) too?
Not strictly, but it helps. AET teaches you how to teach; CAVA teaches you how to test. Most top-tier professionals hold both.
Your Experience is Valuable. Monetize It.
You have spent years building your skills. Now, it’s time to let those skills work for you.
Becoming an Assessor allows you to stay in the industry you love, without the back-breaking labor. You get to shape the next generation of professionals and earn a stable, professional income.
Whether you want to work for a college, a private training provider, or as a freelance End Point Assessor, it all starts with the Level 3 CAVA.
Put down the tools. Pick up the tablet. Start Assessing.
