Ready to Come in From the Cold?

Door Supervision is honorable work, but it’s tough. It’s physically demanding, you are exposed to the weather, and the risk of confrontation is always there.
What if you could earn the same money (or often more) sitting in a warm, secure control room, using your brain instead of your brawn?

There is a misconception that watching CCTV is just “staring at TV screens.” It’s not. It is Visual Intelligence. You are the first line of defense, guiding police and ground teams to incidents before they escalate.

The Level 2 Award for Working as a CCTV Operator (Public Space Surveillance) is the mandatory qualification required to obtain the SIA CCTV license. It legally authorizes you to monitor members of the public using surveillance systems in shopping centers, councils, events, and corporate hubs.

At National Training GB, we train the next generation of control room operators who are tech-savvy, alert, and legally compliant.

What is the Level 2 SIA CCTV Course?

The Level 2 Award for CCTV Operators (Public Space Surveillance) is a nationally recognized, Ofqual-regulated qualification required by the SIA for any individual whose job involves using CCTV equipment to monitor the activities of a member of the public in a public or private place. The 3-day course covers privacy laws (GDPR), surveillance techniques, and evidence management.

Why Your Door Supervisor Badge Isn’t Enough?

This is the most common mistake.
“I have a Door Supervisor license, so I can do everything, right?”
Wrong.
A Door Supervisor license allows you to guard physically. It does NOT allow you to operate public surveillance cameras. Doing so without a CCTV license is a criminal offense.

Pro Tip: If you hold both licenses, you become a “Super Candidate.” Employers love staff who can cover a break on the door and then jump into the control room.

Core Curriculum: More Than Just “Watching Screens”

Modern CCTV is sophisticated. You need to know the law as well as you know the joystick.

Unit 1: Principles of Working in the Private Security Industry

(Shared with Door Supervision). Covers Health & Safety, Fire procedures, and the Private Security Industry Act.

Unit 2: Principles of Working as a CCTV Operator

This is the legal minefield. You will master:

  • Data Protection Act 2018 (GDPR): Understanding privacy rights. You can’t just zoom in on anyone for no reason. You need a “Lawful Basis.”
  • Surveillance Codes of Practice: How to operate ethically.
  • Body Worn Video (BWV): The principles of using wearable cameras (crucial for modern security).

Unit 3: Practical Operation of CCTV Equipment

The fun part. You will get hands-on experience with:

  • Tracking: Following a suspect through a network of cameras without losing them.
  • Lost Property/Persons: Using playback to find a lost child in a mall or a stolen bag.
  • Evidence Management: How to burn footage to a disc/USB and hand it to the police so it stands up in court.

Instructor’s Insight:
“The hardest part of the exam isn’t the practical test; it’s the

Who is This Course For?

This IS for you if:

  • You want a less physical role: Perfect for older operatives or those with injuries who have vast security experience but can’t stand for 12 hours.
  • You are tech-savvy: If you are comfortable with computers, multiple monitors, and software, you will excel here.
  • You want to work in Retail Security: Most retail jobs (Store Detectives) require you to monitor cameras to spot shoplifters.

This is NOT for you if:

  • You struggle with concentration: You need to stay alert for long periods. If you get distracted easily, you might miss a critical incident.
  • You only want to monitor “Private” CCTV: Technically, you don’t need a license to monitor cameras on private property where the public has no access (e.g., a closed factory yard). However, 95% of jobs are “Public Space” and require this license.

Overcoming the “Hidden” Obstacles

“Do I need First Aid for this course?”
Unlike the Door Supervisor course, First Aid is NOT currently a mandatory prerequisite for the CCTV course itself. However, having it makes you more employable.

“Is there a physical test?”
No. There is no physical intervention or fitness test. This makes it an accessible career for people of all physical abilities.

“I have a criminal record.”
Like all SIA licenses, this depends on the offense. Because CCTV involves handling sensitive personal data, offenses involving fraud, data theft, or voyeurism are viewed strictly. Check the SIA criminal record indicator if unsure.

Rates vary, but CCTV operators often earn a premium over standard guarding because of the technical skill involved. Specialized control room managers can earn significantly more (£30k+).

Can I get a discount on my SIA license?
Yes! If you already hold a Door Supervisor license, the SIA gives you 50% off the application fee for your second license (CCTV). This makes getting “Double Badged” very affordable.
