Stop Limiting Your Paycheck with the Wrong Badge!
In the security industry, there is a hierarchy. At the bottom, you have the standard Security Guarding license (Green Badge). It limits you to retail and offices. It keeps you on the sidelines.
Then, you have the Door Supervisor license (Blue Badge).
This is the industry heavyweight. It is the recession-proof qualification that allows you to work anywhere—from the front doors of high-end nightclubs and festivals to corporate reception desks and construction sites.
Smart operatives don’t waste time on the Green Badge. They go straight for the Blue.
The Level 2 Award for Working as a Door Supervisor within the Private Security Industry is the mandatory, Ofqual-regulated qualification required to obtain the SIA Door Supervisor license. It legally authorizes you to conduct licensable activities in premises where alcohol is sold, as well as standard guarding roles.
At National Training GB, we don’t just help you pass the test; we prepare you for the reality of the job.
What is the Level 2 Door Supervision Course?
The Level 2 Door Supervision Course is a 6-day vocational qualification required by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) for individuals working in licensed premises. It covers four mandatory units: Working in the Private Security Industry, Working as a Door Supervisor, Conflict Management, and Physical Intervention. Successful completion grants eligibility for the SIA ‘Blue Badge’.
The “Green vs. Blue” Debate: Solved
Why is the Door Supervisor license superior? Because of Versatility.
| Feature | Security Guarding (Green) | Door Supervision (Blue) |
| Retail & Offices | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Construction Sites | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Pubs, Clubs & Bars | ❌ NO (Illegal) | ✅ Yes |
| Events & Festivals | ⚠️ Limited | ✅ Yes |
| Physical Intervention Training | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
| Market Value | Lower hourly rate | Higher hourly rate |
Our Advice: Even if you never plan to work in a pub, get the Door Supervisor license. It makes you hireable for every security job, not just 50% of them.
Core Curriculum: The 4 Pillars of a Modern Operative
The SIA updated the qualification in 2021 (the “New Standards”). It is no longer just about standing by a door. It is about public safety, counter-terrorism, and legal compliance.
Unit 1: Principles of Working in the Private Security Industry
The foundation. You will cover:
- The Private Security Industry Act 2001: Knowing your legal powers (and limitations).
- Health & Safety: Fire procedures and emergency evacuations.
- Counter-Terrorism: The ACT (Action Counters Terrorism) module is now mandatory. You will learn to spot hostile reconnaissance and manage dynamic lockdowns.
Unit 2: Principles of Working as a Door Supervisor
The specific trade skills.
- Admission Policies: Managing queues and capacity.
- Search Procedures: The legal way to search persons and bags for weapons or drugs.
- Vulnerable People: Recognizing duty of care for intoxicated or vulnerable patrons (a huge focus for the SIA right now).
- Preserving Evidence: Crime scene management before the police arrive.
Unit 3: Application of Conflict Management
The “Verbal Judo” module.
- You will learn how to use the LEAPS model (Listen, Empathize, Ask, Paraphrase, Summarize) to de-escalate aggressive behavior.
- The goal is to solve the problem without ever touching the customer.
Unit 4: Application of Physical Intervention
The safety module.
- Non-Pain Compliant Holds: How to escort and hold a subject safely.
- Positional Asphyxia: Understanding the medical risks of restraint.
- Legal Justification: Understanding “Reasonable Force” under Section 3 of the Criminal Law Act 1967.
Instructor’s Pro Insight:
“Unit 4 is where most people get nervous. Don’t be. We aren’t teaching you MMA. We are teaching you ‘Low-Level’ intervention. It’s about protecting yourself and the customer. If you can follow instructions, you will pass. Safety is the only priority here.”
Critical Prerequisite: The “First Aid” Rule
You cannot take this course without a valid First Aid qualification. This is a strict SIA requirement.
You must hold a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate (with at least 12 months remaining) before you start.
- Don’t have one? No problem. National Training GB offers a bundle package where you do your First Aid on Day 1 of the course. We handle everything under one roof.
Who is This Course For?
This IS for you if:
- You want flexibility: Security work fits around university, parenting, or another job.
- You are a veteran/ex-forces: Your discipline is highly valued in this sector.
- You want a “Recession-Proof” income: Bars, shops, and hospitals always need security.
This is NOT for you if:
- You have a serious criminal record: Check the SIA Criminal Record Indicator before booking. Violent crimes or fraud may bar you from getting a license.
- You cannot attend in person: This course requires 44 contact hours (min 6 days). You cannot do the Physical Intervention part online.

Frequently Asked Questions (SIA Door Supervisor)
How long does the SIA badge last?
The license is valid for 3 years. After that, you must take a short “Top-Up” refresher course to renew it.
Can I work as a CCTV Operator with this license?
No. The Door Supervisor license covers guarding and physical roles. To monitor public surveillance cameras, you need a separate Level 2 CCTV Operator license. Many operatives hold both.
Is the course difficult?
It is designed to be accessible. The assessment involves multiple-choice exams and a practical test (demonstrating a search and a hold). If you listen to the instructor, you will pass.
Your Badge is Waiting
The security industry is currently facing a massive shortage of qualified Door Supervisors. Wages are rising. Venues are desperate for professional, licensed staff.
You can stay in your current lane, or you can spend 6 days with us and open up a career path that offers variety, respect, and a solid income.
The Blue Badge is the gold standard. Go get it.
